Natural Remedies to Treat Arthritis

February 24th, 2010

The word ‘arthritis’ means ‘inflammation of joints.’ It comes from two Greek words, athron meaning joints and itis meaning inflammation. It is a chronic disease process. In the early stages, the whole body is usually involved and one or two joints may become completely deformed, leaving the patient handicapped and somewhat weakened.

Arthritis is a chronic disease, which means it’s something that you can’t completely escape from by using only medications and other traditional treatments. Home remedies for arthritis are considered excellent alternatives because not only are they safe to use, they are also occasionally more effective and definitely more affordable.

Stretching and Movement. One of the home remedies for arthritis that you can do is stretching and movement. It is best to know how to move properly when you have arthritis. Be sure to practice stretching gently so that you can allow your body some healthy movement even if the arthritis is on the attack.

Maintain a vegetarian diet – studies have shown that reducing the amount of saturated fat intake and increasing the amount of unsaturated fat can help to alleviate the pain caused by arthritis. A vegetarian diet almost eliminates the intake of saturated fat.

The most effective natural remedies for this type of arthritis are actually the simplest ones. Drinking the right amount of water, for example, is something that is not only good for the elimination of excess uric acid in the system, but it also prevents dehydration, kidney problems and other serious diseases.

Garlic, juniper, lavender, cajuput, sage, rosemary, thyme, or sassafras Any one of these oils diluted in the proportions of one part to 10 parts of olive oil and used to massage the painful joint will bring immense relief.

An effective home remedy for arthritis is potato juice. You simply make a juice from potatoes and then consume the juice. Many older arthritis patients bring this home remedy for arthritis to us from many generations of effective use. It is believed that potatoes play an effective role in eliminating the pain that is associated with arthritis.

Peppermint oil, another popular additive to this kind of remedy, has a large amount of the biochemicals menthol and the related compounds menthone and menthyl esters. Their pain relieving actions are similar to the volatile oil of mustard mentioned above and will enhance the analgesic properties of any oil or liniment.

Yoga is also something that is good to help your body rid itself of any excess arthritis pain. It works to improve the arthritis medications you are no doubt taking, and in turn will increase the effectiveness on the body. Also it will work to relax muscles and improve blood circulation. An exercise that some do is that they will tilt the head forward and then rotate it to the right.

Cinnamon and Honey

Dissolve two spoons of honey and a small teaspoon of ground cinnamon in a cup of hot water and drink this – preferably daily. Don’t worry if it’s too sweet, just reduce the honey portion and the same with the cinnamon which can be reduced to half a teaspoon if the taste is too strong. You can also use this topically!
